Microneedling in Rotterdam
Microneedling is a treatment in which fine needles make a great many small channels in the skin, so that your skin starts making new collagen itself. At Diba Clinics in Rotterdam we work with the SkinPen and the Dermapen 4. A treatment of the face costs € 180 and takes 60 minutes, and afterwards you are red for one to three days.

What microneedling
does to your skin
The result comes not from the pricks themselves but from what your skin does afterwards, and that is why you only see it after weeks.
Beneath the epidermis lies the dermis, and that is where the connective tissue sits that keeps your skin firm and smooth. With a scar, a coarse pore or skin that has lost springiness over the years, that connective tissue has become uneven or thinner. A cream does not reach there; that layer lies too deep.
With fine needles, microneedling makes a great many small channels down into the upper dermis. Your skin treats them as small wounds and starts to repair, and in that repair it makes new collagen. That repair is the goal; the pricks are only the occasion for it.
So you do not see the result after one treatment but across a series. What you see in the first days is redness and a little swelling. The real difference builds over weeks and shows best once the series of three to six treatments is finished, with four to six weeks in between.
What microneedling does for a particular concern is worked out separately: for acne scars, for coarse pores, for fine lines, for scars after surgery and for stretch marks. Why there are weeks between the sessions is on the number of sessions.
SkinPen and Dermapen 4
We work with two microneedling pens. Which one you get depends on the area and the depth that suits it, and not on which is better.
The SkinPen has fourteen needles and works a little more calmly. The Dermapen 4 reaches up to 1920 pricks per second and so covers an area faster, with preset modes, including a setting for scars at the maximum depth. On both the depth is adjustable from 0.25 to 3 millimetres.
That depth is the setting that really matters. Shallow only reaches the epidermis and heals within a day; three millimetres goes into the connective tissue and takes longer. Around your eyes and on your forehead, where the skin lies thin over bone, the pen goes less deep than on your cheeks.
The needle cartridges are sterile and are discarded after each treatment. With microneedling that is not a detail, because the needles go through your skin's protective layer. Beforehand a numbing cream goes on that takes half an hour to work; what you feel after that is mostly vibration and pressure.

Microneedling works in a series. If you compare prices, reckon with the amount per session times the number of sessions. How many that becomes for you, you hear after the measurement; we do not promise a fixed number beforehand.

Then you book a treatment on advice. We reserve at most two hours for that: the intake, and then at least an hour to treat. If treating is safe at that moment and you want it, we do the first microneedling in the same appointment.
What the intake costs
If you are treated in the same appointment, the intake fee is waived and you pay only for the treatment. If the treatment does not go ahead, the intake costs € 50. A separate intake without treatment lasts at most 30 minutes and always costs € 50.

What helps and what we advise against
Microneedling works on the texture of your skin. For pigment from the sun, for vessels and for inflamed skin there is a different answer.

Does microneedling help against acne scars?
With scars formed by loss of structure, such as the shallow dents after acne, it can help a good deal. Deep or tethered scars often need a combination with laser. While the acne is still active we do not start: the skin has to be calm first.
Is microneedling possible on darker skin?
Often yes, and it is then one of the better options, because no heat is involved. With skin types IV to VI we pay extra attention to pigment forming after the treatment and adjust the depth accordingly. We discuss that beforehand.
