Microneedling for coarse pores

A pore cannot close; oil has to get out. What can happen is that the rim around it becomes firmer, and that is exactly the difference between a pore that stands out and a pore you do not see. We do the same treatment with the Dermapen 4 as well; which pen it becomes is chosen by the therapist per area.

The mechanism

Why this here does about it

Pores draw the eye when the skin around them is slack. The opening itself is about the same size in everyone; what differs is whether the rim stands taut or has sunk a little. With a sunken rim shadow falls in and then the opening looks bigger than it is.

Microneedling gets new collagen going in the upper dermis. That is the tissue holding that rim up, and when it tightens the opening becomes less deep and catches less shadow.

So this is a texture treatment and not a cleanse. Emptying a pore helps for a few days; firming the rim lasts longer.

The approach

What is goes differently than usual

  • Shallower and across a larger area

For texture, coverage counts more than depth. The work goes across the whole area rather than on separate spots, at a setting lighter than for scars.

  • Often combined with cleansing

A HydraFacial beforehand removes what is in the pores. Needling on a full pore is the wrong order.

  • Maintenance comes with it

After the starting series, a session per quarter holds the result. Collagen breaks down again; that is not failure but how skin works.

What you can expect

What it gives you

Skin that looks more even and reflects light more evenly, usually visible from the third session. What does not happen is that pores disappear: if anyone promises that, they are promising something about anatomy that is not true.

How often
A series of three to six, with four to six weeks in between.
Recovery time
One to three days red, like a strong sun flush.

When not

When you would choose something else

  • With oily skin and many blackheads, cleansing and oil control is the first step; needling does little about that.
  • With active inflammation nothing is prompted.
  • Anyone looking for an immediately visible difference will be disappointed here: this works over months.
Everything about this concern
Frequently asked questions

What people asked about this.

No. The opening stays; what changes is the firmness of the skin around it, so that less shadow falls into it and it stands out less.

A HydraFacial takes out what is in there and you see that straight away; it lasts days to weeks. Needling changes the skin around it and that takes months. The two do not clash, they work on different things.

The first step

Whether this suits you,
your skin will show.

Everything above applies to this concern in general. What is going on with you and whether this is the right route is established by the therapist at the skin consultation. If the answer is no, you hear that too.
