Microneedling for acne scars
Acne scars are not marks but shapes: the skin is missing connective tissue there, and so it catches the light differently. No cream helps against that and no peel; those work on colour and on the top layer. Microneedling works on the shape. We do the same treatment with the Dermapen 4 as well; which pen it becomes is chosen by the therapist per area.
Why this here does about it
An acne scar forms because inflammation has cleared away connective tissue and too little has come back in its place. What is left is a pit in which light makes a shadow, and it is that shadow you see in the mirror.
The pen places hundreds of channels down into the upper dermis, exactly the layer where that connective tissue sits. The body repairs those channels with new collagen, and that fills up the floor of the pit. Not at once: the building carries on over weeks to months, and that is why you see nothing yet after the first session.
With acne scars that is the whole story. It is not about the colour but about the depth: the less difference in height, the less shadow, the less you see the scar.
What is goes differently than usual
Deeper than in an ordinary session
For texture the work goes deeper than for skin improvement. The therapist sets the depth per area; more is possible on the cheek than on the jawline.
The acne first, then the scar
As long as there is active inflammation, no work is done on scars. Prompting inflamed skin makes new scars more likely, not less.
A series, not a session
Four to six times with four to six weeks in between. That time in between is not waiting but the treatment: it is when the collagen is made.
What it gives you
Count on months and on improvement, not on disappearance. Pits become shallower and the skin looks more even; a scar that is no longer there is a promise nobody can keep. What still stands after the series we look at together before deciding whether more makes sense.
- How often
- A series of three to six, with four to six weeks in between.
- Recovery time
- One to three days red, like a strong sun flush.
- From
- € 180
When you would choose something else
- With dark or red marks without a dent this is not the first choice: that is colour, and light or a peel works better on it.
- With deep, sharply bordered pits (ice-pick scars) needling often does not go far enough; then a fractional laser is a more realistic route.
- If you are prone to keloid, nothing is prompted before a doctor has taken a look.
What people asked about this.
Not on the places where it is active. We start with the acne itself; once the skin is calm, there is something to work on that stays calm too.
Usually four to six, with four to six weeks in between. How many it becomes for you depends on how deep the scars sit and how your skin responds to the first.
What we Microneedling with the SkinPen use it for
SkinPen for coarse pores
A pore cannot close; oil has to get out.
SkinPen for fine lines
There are two kinds of line and they ask for different things.
SkinPen for surgical scars
A surgical scar is different tissue from the skin around it: the connective tissue lies in one direction instead of criss-cross.
Microneedling for stretch marks
Stretch marks are tears in the dermis formed from within because the skin was stretched faster than it could grow with.
Whether this suits you,
your skin will show.
Everything above applies to this concern in general. What is going on with you and whether this is the right route is established by the therapist at the skin consultation. If the answer is no, you hear that too.
