How to choose a skin clinic

When choosing a skin clinic, four things can be checked without having been there: whether your therapist is in a public register, whether measuring comes before treating, whether the prices are on the site in advance, and whether it is explained when something is not sensible. The rest you only notice in the treatment room.

What you check

What you can check
in advance

Four things are online and can be checked in ten minutes. They do not say everything, but they say more than an impression of a website.

Skin therapist is a legally protected training title, set down in article 34 of the Dutch Individual Healthcare Professions Act. A four-year bachelor's degree in skin therapy belongs with it, and that programme exists in two places in the Netherlands. Beauty therapist is not a protected title; that says nothing about anyone's craft, but it does mean the title itself carries no guarantee.

The title says someone has done the training. The Dutch Quality Register for Paramedics says something else: that someone also practises the profession and keeps it current. Re-registration requires at least 1600 working hours over three years plus 160 points of continuing education. That register is public and you search it by name, including the name of your therapist at another clinic.

For the non-paramedical part of the work there are ANBOS and the SKIN Register. The first is the trade association with a code of conduct, hygiene guidelines and a complaints procedure; the second registers beauty therapists by name. Those can be looked up too.

And then there are the ratings. A score on the site itself is there because someone put it there. A rating kept outside the clinic, such as on ZorgkaartNederland run by the Dutch Patients Federation, cannot be placed or removed by the clinic, and so says more.

Which registers we belong to and how to check that is on quality and registrations. Who works here and with which title is on the team.

At the clinic

What a first
appointment gives you

The second part you only see once you are inside, and it is the part that separates a treatment from a plan.

A first appointment should start with looking and measuring, and not with treating. Without a starting point there is no way to establish afterwards whether anything has changed, and then all that remains is the feeling that it was probably fine. So ask whether measuring happens, with what, and whether you get that image back.

Then a plan should follow setting out what is needed, how many times that is and what it costs. An amount that only lands in the treatment room is not a price agreement but a surprise. All rates should be findable in advance, and ours are on the price page.

The third is the hardest to ask and the most telling: what happens when treating is not sensible at that moment. Inflamed skin, tanned skin just before a laser treatment, a spot that has to be assessed by a doctor first. A no belongs with those, with a reason and an alternative.

Finally the photos. A before-and-after can only be compared if the light, the angle, the distance and the make-up are the same. If any of those differ, you are comparing two images and not a result. Ask how the images are taken, and whether you get to see your own side by side.

What helps and what we advise against

These points say something about the way of working. About the outcome of your treatment they say less than people hope.

This works

  • Whether your therapist's title is protected, and whether the registration is in order
  • Whether measuring happens before treating
  • Whether the rate is findable in advance, versions and all
  • Whether it is explained when something had better not happen

We advise against this

  • Whether a treatment suits your skin. That only follows from the measurement
  • How many sessions you need. A number beforehand is about someone else's skin
  • Whether a more expensive device gives a better result. What counts is the choice behind it
  • What it feels like to sit there. For that you have to have been once

Who you see here

Working here are five skin therapists, beauty therapists and orthomolecular skin specialists. Which title belongs with which treatment is listed per person on the team page, and who does your appointment you hear when you book it.

About How to choose a skin clinic

Frequently asked questions

What should I look at in a before-and-after photo?

At light, angle, distance and make-up. If those four are the same, you are comparing a skin with the same skin. If any of them differ, you are comparing two images and the difference says nothing about the treatment. Ask too whether the photos come from a fixed device or from a phone.

Is a more expensive treatment better?

Not automatically. The price says something about the device, the time and the products, and nothing about whether that treatment suits your concern. A cheaper treatment that does the right thing gives more than an expensive one doing the wrong thing. That difference comes from the measurement and not from the price list.

Should I get a treatment plan on paper?

You should at least be told what is needed, how many sessions that is and what it costs, before you agree to anything. Here that conversation happens after the measurement, and you take the outcome with you. You are not committed to anything afterwards.

May I ask who will treat me?

Yes, and it is a normal question. Here the team page lists who works here and with which title, and when you book you hear who will do it. If you change therapist, your file with the measurements simply stays in place.

What if a clinic wants to treat straight away?

Then ask what that choice is based on. Treating without a measurement can turn out perfectly well, but afterwards there is no way to establish what has changed, and with a concern that does not respond you do not know where it went wrong. So here a first appointment starts with looking and measuring.

How do I know whether a clinic is contracted with my insurer?

That is in your insurer's provider finder and usually on the clinic's site too. A contract does not mean everything is reimbursed: that depends on your supplementary policy and on the indication. We are contracted with all Dutch health insurers.

Does a device certificate mean anything?

It says the device is what it is called, and that is useful. It says nothing about the settings it is used with, and that is exactly where the difference between a good and a mediocre treatment sits. So ask instead who operates the device and how the setting is chosen.

What is a reasonable outcome of a first appointment?

That you know what you have, what can be done about it, how many times that takes and what it costs. And that you hear what cannot be done about it. If the measurement turns up nothing that needs treating, that is an outcome too, and you have paid for a consultation instead of a programme.

Can I go somewhere with a complaint about a treatment?

Yes. For the paramedical part that goes through the professional association and the Dutch Quality Register for Paramedics; for the beauty part through the ANBOS complaints procedure. Those routes stand apart from the clinic itself, and that is exactly the point of them.

Where in Rotterdam are you?

Not sure

Unsure about an offer

Feel free to put it to us. We say what we think, even when the answer is that what you have found sounds fine or that your concern belongs with a doctor. You do not need an appointment for that.

If you know what you are after but are unsure about the timing or the combination with something else, ask via WhatsApp. There is a therapist on the other end and not a form.
