How many sessions do you need

How many sessions you need depends on the treatment and on your skin. A facial treatment can be a one-off, microneedling and peels usually go in a series of three to six with four to six weeks in between, and laser hair removal takes six to ten, spread over months, because hair grows in cycles. At Diba Clinics in Rotterdam you hear after the measurement which number is realistic in your case.

The rhythm

Why it is often a series

Your skin works in cycles and so does your hair. A treatment that follows those asks for repetition; a treatment that stays at the surface often does not.

The top layer of your skin renews itself in about four weeks. A treatment working there, such as a facial or a superficial peel, does its work within that one cycle. The result is immediate and in the weeks after it falls back to the starting point, which is why those treatments are called maintenance.

If a treatment goes deeper, you are not working with the cycle but setting repair in motion. New collagen builds over weeks, and every session adds a layer to it. So with microneedling and with most laser treatments there are four to six weeks in between: earlier and the previous session is not finished, later and you are partly starting again.

With hair removal it is different again. A laser only hits the hair that is in its growth phase at that moment, and that is only part of what is there. The rest has its turn in the weeks after, which is why six to ten sessions are needed, spread over months. The number depends on the area and on your skin type.

A pigment programme like Cosmelan or Dermamelan counts not sessions but months: one mask in the clinic, and then a fixed routine at home with check-ups along the way. What you do there counts for more than what happens in the treatment room.

The number per treatment is also on the treatment page itself, at all treatments. How a first appointment goes is on the skin consultation.

The number

Why you are given
a range beforehand

Naming an exact number before your skin has been measured sounds helpful and is not. What you do get is a range with the reason behind it.

What a treatment does depends on how your skin reacts to it, and beforehand that is an estimate. In one person the texture is where it should be after three sessions, in another the same goal takes six. So a number fixed beforehand is a promise about someone else's skin.

So we measure at the start and record that measurement. At every check-up the new image goes beside the previous one, under the same light and from the same angle. That way a conversation is possible halfway about what has changed, rather than a feeling afterwards.

If an approach gives too little, adjusting or stopping is the outcome of that conversation. Finishing a series because it happens to be booked is the wrong order. What you paid in advance for a course then stays credited towards another treatment.

Stopping halfway gives the result of half a series, and that is something other than half the result. With hair removal that is clearest: the hair that was in its growth phase during the missed sessions simply was not hit.

What helps and what we advise against

A series is there to build something. For anything outside that, repeating is the wrong answer.

This works

  • Repair that builds over weeks, as with microneedling and laser
  • Hair growing in cycles, so that only part of it can be hit each time
  • Maintenance of a result that falls back on its own
  • A programme in which the home routine does most of the work

We advise against this

  • A result that is already settled after one time. Then a second session is one too many
  • A concern that does not respond. If the measurement stays the same, the approach changes
  • Skin that is inflamed or irritated at that moment. We calm that first
  • A number fixed beforehand without your skin having been measured

Who decides the number

The skin therapist or laser specialist treating you, based on the measurement at the start and the check-ups along the way. At every check-up the images go side by side, and from that follows whether the series carries on as it stood.

Who works here, with what title and what that title means exactly, is on the team page with photos and all.

About How many sessions do you need

Frequently asked questions

How many laser hair removal sessions do you need?

Usually six to ten, spread over months. That is because a laser only hits the hair in its growth phase at that moment; the rest has its turn in the weeks after. The number depends on the area, on your skin type and on your hair, and you hear at the intake what is realistic in your case.

How many microneedling sessions are needed?

Usually a series of three to six, with four to six weeks in between. That time is not there for the calendar but for your skin: new collagen builds over weeks, and every session adds a layer. With scars and with deeper texture it is more often six than three.

Why are there four to six weeks between two sessions?

Because your skin needs that time to finish what the previous session set in motion. Treating earlier means working on skin that is still busy; much later means part of the gain has already fallen back.

Can I see anything after one session?

With a facial treatment usually straight away, because it works at the surface. With microneedling, laser and peels you often see something in the texture after the first session, but the goal you came for takes the whole series.

What happens if I stop halfway?

Then you keep the result of half a series, and that is something other than half the result. With hair removal that is clearest: the hair that was in its growth phase during the missed sessions was not hit and simply keeps growing.

Why do you not name a fixed number beforehand?

Because it depends on how your skin reacts, and beforehand that is an estimate. You get a range with the reason behind it, a measurement at the start and a check-up along the way where we put side by side what has changed. From that follows the number you really need.

Is a course cheaper than separate sessions?

With a number of treatments, yes. Skin boosters and Fotona 4D have a course rate lower than three separate sessions together. The amounts are with the treatment itself and on the price page, and you only choose after the intake.

How often should I come back for maintenance?

With a facial treatment usually every four to six weeks, because the effect falls back on its own. With a programme that builds repair, maintenance is a check-up every six months to a year, depending on what we measure.

Do I have to book all the sessions in advance?

You do not have to, but it helps. The time between two sessions is part of the treatment, and a series that runs over because there was no space gives less. You can schedule the appointments in one go and still move them later.

Not sure

Not sure whether a series is needed

That is exactly what the first appointment shows. We measure your skin, discuss what you want to change and say what that takes, even when it is less than you thought. If there turns out to be nothing that needs treating, you hear that too.

If you know what you are after but are unsure about the timing or the combination with something else, ask via WhatsApp. There is a therapist on the other end and not a form.
