Light on pigmentation and sun damage. The pigment first comes to the surface and then fades.
What IPL costs with us, why it is not a laser and when it is better to wait is on IPL treatment in Rotterdam.
Where it lands
IPL works with a range of wavelengths and a filter that takes out the coarsest. With pigment that light seeks out the dark: the spot absorbs the energy, becomes grainy and works its way to the surface, where it fades in the days after. It goes less deep than a laser, and that is exactly what superficial pigment needs.

What happens
Acts on
Blood vessels
The red in blood absorbs certain wavelengths. That way you hit a vessel without the skin around it.
- Stratum corneumThe outer layer of dead cells. What happens here shows quickly and heals quickly.Passes through here
- EpidermisWhere your pigment sits and where new skin cells come from.It works here
- Upper dermisThis is where the connective tissue starts. What you reach here heals by building. It works here
- Deep dermisHair roots, vessels and the firmness of your skin. Working this deep needs a reason.Does not reach here
Every treatment starts with cleansing, and that is done by hand. Make-up and sebum come off and the therapist checks that everything is gone, because a device or an active ingredient that works on a layer never reaches your skin.

Nordlys IPL for pigmentation, during the treatment
What you notice in the chair
A cool gel goes on and then the handpiece comes onto your skin. Every flash feels like a short flick with an elastic band, and you see it through your eyelids as well; that is why goggles go on.
The reaction shows straight away: a pigment spot temporarily stands out more sharply and becomes darker. That belongs with it and does not mean it is getting worse.
Afterwards you are red for a few hours. The pigment that comes up fades in the days after. Sun protection here is not advice but part of the treatment.
What this treatment is meant for
On the left where this treatment works well, on the right when another treatment does more for you.
- Treats a large area in a short time, so sun damage across the whole cheek in one session
- Works well on sharply defined spots from the sun
- Needs little recovery time: usually you are presentable again the same day
- Is not the first choice for melasma; there the pigment often reacts to heat instead
- Does not work on pigment sitting deeper in the skin
- Not possible on tanned skin, so after the sun we wait
