Fotona TimeWalker

The technique

What this device actually does

The TimeWalker carries two lasers in one cabinet. An Er:YAG at 2940 nanometres, which is absorbed almost entirely by water and so stays at the surface. And an Nd:YAG at 1064 nanometres, which is held back far less by water and so reaches deeper.

What is special is the way Fotona drives the Er:YAG. In SMOOTH mode the energy comes as a series of slow pulses instead of one hard one, so that the tissue heats up without the epidermis being removed. That is the difference between vaporising and heating, and it is why this mode leaves no open skin.

The same SMOOTH mode sits behind NightLase, where the soft palate is treated instead of the skin of your face. The laser is the same; only the place and the setting differ.

Why are there two lasers in one device?

Because they do different things. The Er:YAG at 2940 nanometres is almost entirely absorbed by water and so stays at the surface; the Nd:YAG at 1064 nanometres goes much deeper. Together they cover a range one laser does not reach.

What is SMOOTH mode?

A way of driving the Er:YAG in which the energy comes in a series of slow pulses rather than one hard one. So the tissue warms up without the epidermis being removed: it is heated and not vaporised.

Is this the same device as with NightLase?

Yes, and the same mode. Only the place differs: with NightLase it is the soft palate and not the skin of your face.

Do I feel anything of it?

You feel warmth that rises slowly. During the session the therapist asks about it and adjusts the device to your answer.
